11th Wing

The 11th Wing, “The Chief’s Own,” is the modern incarnation of a unit dating to before World War II. The original unit was the 11th Observation Group, a reconnaissance group established in 1933, reconstituted in 1938 as a medium bombardment group, and again reconstituted for heavy bombardment for World War II. The 11th Bombardment Group, nicknamed the Grey Geese, served in the Pacific Theater, earning a Presidential Unit Citation for actions against enemy Japanese targets in the Central Pacific, mainland Japan, Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Eastern Mandates, the Western Pacific, the Ryukyus, and China. The 11th BG was upgraded repeatedly in the war, starting with the B-17 Flying Fortress and finishing with B-29 Superfortress. The 11th BG wound down after the war, and briefly inactivated in 1948, then reactivated later that year for a nuclear mission, soon upgrading to B-36 Peacemakers. In 1951 the 11th was expanded to become the 11th Bombardment Wing, and in December 1957 upgraded to B-52 Stratofortresses, adding an air refuelling mission. In 1962 the 11th BW added an Atlas strategic missile mission and squadron, and was renamed the 11th Strategic Aerospace Wing for a few years, until the Atlas phased out of service in 1965. The 11th shifted to an air refuelling mission before being inactivated in 1969. The unit remained inactive until 1978, when the unit was reactivated as the 11th Strategic Group, which served as an air tanker unit until 1990. The drawdown after the end of the Cold War led to another inactive period until 1994, when the 11th was reactivated as the 11th Support Wing, renamed 11th Wing in 1995, with the basic mission of managing the units supporting Headquarters Air Force. This mission continues with the 11th Wing supporting Air Force District of Washington.

The 79th Medical Wing is the central medical service unit for Air Force units in the US capital region, providing medical care to thousands of airmen and officers and families. The 79th also provides medical care for units of the 89th Airlift Wing on mission supporting the President or Vice-President in transit.

The 89th Airlift Wing started as an ordinary troop carrier wing, activated in the Reserves in 1949, inactivated in 1951 and reactivated through the Korean War as a fighter-bomber wing. The 89th was inactivated again until 1966, when the 89th was reactivated to assume the mission of the 1254th Air Transport Wing, transporting the Executive Branch, including the President of the United States, Vice-President, their families, and high ranking dignitaries, and to perform other airlift missions as directed by the Commander in Chief. This is the wing that flies the planes callsign Air Force One and Air Force Two. The 89th also conducts or supports humanitarian aid missions and diplomatic missions as required.
